Sabre-toothed cats had almost comically abundant bites: these cats could open their jaws to a snake-worthy 120 degrees, or about twice as wide as a modern lion (or a gaping house cat). Paradoxically, however, the various species of Smilodon did not chew on their prey with much force, as they needed to protect their precious canines from accidental breakage!
