The breeding of ornamental koi began in the early 19th century. The Magoi (wild black carp) was originally introduced to Japan from China as a food source for rice farmers.

Kin Matsuba Koi: Kin Matsuba means "Golden Pinecone," and there is no better description for this fish. This variety originated in the 1950s through a cross between a Yamabuki Ogon (a fish with a metallic gold color) and a Shiro Matsuba (which displayed the matsuba scale pattern). An ideal specimen has a bright, uniform metallic yellow color over the entire body, without dull or faded spots. The "pinecone" effect must be evenly distributed over the body with a consistent and symmetrical pattern. The net-like markings must not run or fade over the scales, and tight, sharp edges indicate the highest quality of this variety. Thick and glossy skin ensures that the metallic colors stand out even more, and koi with this trait often score highly in competitions.
