The coelacanths are the closest evolutionary link between fish and the first amphibians, who made the transition from sea to land in the Devonian more than 362 million years ago. While the fishpods lived in muddy water close to shore, the coelacanths lived in open water. The modern species are predators that live in the deep ocean.
