Crooked Kareltje, the beloved pirate from the Sparrow & Captain Evilbeard series, wasn't always crooked. As a child, he was simply called Kareltje and stood as straight as a board. He lives with his parents in a caravan, and they travel around with a motley crew. He and his best friend Hinkelien are inseparable. When they arrive in a village where everyone seems to be bullied, the duo decides to do whatever it takes to put an end to it.

The Sparrow & Captain Evilbeard series is wildly popular with readers. The first volume, The 5 Snakes, was nominated for the Hotze de Roos Prize and was on the 2021 Children's Jury Recommended List. This was followed by The Course to the Kraken (volume 2), awarded the 2022 Children's Jury, The Amorphous (volume 3), awarded the 2023 Children's Jury, The Revenge of the Fury (volume 4), awarded the 2024 Children's Jury, and The Last Siren (volume 5). This is a new story in the world of Sparrow.
