It's autumn 1945. The war has just ended, and eleven-year-old Wim is allowed to go to Sweden to recuperate after the terrible Hunger Winter. He's going to live with a family for a year with five children, a dog, and a cat. Along the way, he sees the devastation of war. Upon his arrival in Sweden, things are quite different. Everything is still intact and tidy, and there's plenty of food. Yet, Wim struggles to adjust. He doesn't speak Swedish, and in his nightmares, the war isn't over yet. Will he be able to feel at home there? "The Tulip Boy" is based on the true story of Willem, a Dutchman who, like some 10,000 other children aged 8 to 12, was sent to Sweden to recuperate after World War II. This is a piece of history that hasn't been widely written about.
