It's April 1945, and the residents of the mining town of Penzberg hear on the radio that the war is over. American troops could reach the town in southern Germany at any moment. The Nazi mayor is deposed by the former mayor and several other men, including Marie's father. Schorsch is 15 and a member of the Hitler Youth. He is in love with Marie. When a fanatical Wehrmacht faction, unwilling to surrender, arrests the former mayor and his followers, Marie and Schorsch witness a horrific event outside the town. Marie's father is forced into hiding, and Schorsch witnesses firsthand what the Wehrmacht does to all so-called traitors. As the son of a Nazi, he faces a difficult choice.
