Flos and the Glass Palace - Children's Book

December 1914

Flos grows up with his grandparents near the Belgian border, where the First World War has broken out in full force. His mother works as an actress in Amsterdam. Flos sees her rarely, but just before Christmas, she comes to pick him up unexpectedly. Once in the city, his mother pays hardly any attention to him because she is too busy rehearsing.

Flos wanders alone along the snowy canals. After an argument, Flos flees to the Glass Palace, where he hides in the deserted theater hall. Out of nowhere, a phantom appears who bears a striking resemblance to the bust of the Palace's deceased owner. He invites Flos to watch a performance with him. When the curtain rises, Flos sees a play that bears a suspicious resemblance to his own life.

Flos and the Glass Palace is a story in the spirit of Charles Dickens that takes place in and around the legendary Palace of Popular Industry in Amsterdam.
