Scheveningen, 1813. The 16-year-old orphan Jan lives and works for the renowned farrier Hendrik Looye. He has a talent with horses and works hard. When Jan is allowed to accompany Hendrik to shoe the horses at the Royal Stables, he meets not only the remarkable horse Wexy, but also Prince Willem Frederik. The two young men hit it off, and the prince takes Jan on as his permanent groom. It's a turbulent time in the Netherlands, and it's not long before the Prince of Orange has to assemble a large army to fight Napoleon. Jan travels along, caring for the horses as best he can during these difficult times. During the Battle of Waterloo, both the prince and Wexy are wounded.
